What happens on an Oshawa lawn visit

Every visit runs in the same order: edge, then mow, then trim. The edges are cut first so the mower has a clean line to work to, the lawn is mown next, and the trimmer finishes the fence lines, the tree rings, the hydro pole, the mailbox post and anything the deck cannot reach. Hard surfaces are blown clean at the end, so the clippings end up back on the lawn and not down the driveway or across the sidewalk.

That order is not a preference. Edging first means the mower cuts over the edged line and buries it, rather than a trimmer scalping a strip of turf afterwards to hide a missed edge. On a mature Oshawa lot with concrete walkways poured in the 1960s, the difference between a lawn that looks cut and a lawn that looks finished is entirely in the edge.

The visit is weekly, on the same day every week, from May 1 to November 1. That is roughly 26 visits in a season. You do not book them, you do not confirm them, and you do not get an invoice for each one. The day is set when you join and it does not move around the route from week to week.

Weekly, not biweekly, and what that means by the middle of July

Almost every advertised lawn price in Durham Region is a biweekly price. It is rarely labelled that way in the headline, and the weekly version usually sits on a higher tier that nobody publishes. Northline does not run a biweekly lawn service at all.

Here is the honest reason, and it is agronomy rather than salesmanship. The rule of thumb for a cool season lawn, which is what nearly every Oshawa property is growing, is that you remove no more than about a third of the blade in a single cut. In early July, on a watered lawn in Windfields or Kedron, grass can put on more growth in fourteen days than a mower can take off in one pass without going well past that third. So the second week of a biweekly cycle is the week the lawn gets hurt: the mower has to drop to reach a finished height, the cut takes too much blade at once, the lawn browns off at the tips for several days, and the clippings come off in clumps thick enough to smother the turf underneath.

Then you get the third problem, which is that it happens in the hottest two weeks of the year, when the plant has the least capacity to recover. A lawn that is scalped in mid July is a lawn that is thin in August, and thin turf in August is what you are looking at when you start pricing overseeding in September.

A weekly cut takes a little off often. It is less dramatic, it produces no clumps worth raking, and the lawn stays at a consistent height all season instead of cycling between shaggy and shorn.

One flat monthly payment, and the arithmetic done honestly

A Northline membership is billed in twelve equal payments, taken on the last day of the month, every month of the year. The payment does not go up in June because the grass is growing and it does not go down in February because it snowed twice. It covers the lawn season and the snow season together.

Compare that to a per cut arrangement properly, because the comparison is usually made badly. Take whatever per cut price you have been quoted and multiply it by 26, because that is the number of weekly visits in a lawn season here. That figure is your summer only. Then add a winter contract on top of it, because a lawn company that bills you per cut is not clearing your driveway in January for free.

Against that, Silver is $129 a month plus HST. Twelve payments of $129 is $1,548 a year before tax, and that single number covers the weekly lawn visits and the winter service together, with one company, one agreement and one payment date. Gold is $189 a month and Platinum is $279 a month, both on the same twelve payment structure. If you would rather pay once, the annual prepay saves 5 percent: $1,470.60, $2,154.60 or $3,180.60 for the year.

A weekly lawn cut in Oshawa costs $75 plus HST bought on its own, with no membership behind it. That is a floor rather than an average, and it sits above the $40 to $75 one off visit on purpose, because a weekly slot holds a standing place on a fixed local route for the whole season rather than an hour of somebody’s Tuesday. Multiply it out and the comparison stops being vague: $1,950 plus HST buys twenty six cuts and nothing else, while $2,268 buys Gold, which is the same weekly cut plus both cleanups plus the driveway plowed after every storm. Here is the part that costs me the sale. If all you want is the grass cut, and you will handle your own snow, paying per cut is the cheaper answer and you should take it.

There is a second, quieter advantage. A per cut arrangement produces a different bill every month and a stack of paperwork you have to read to check. Twelve identical payments are a line you can set and forget, and if something is ever wrong with one of them it is obvious immediately, because it is the one that does not match the other eleven.

The three memberships

Silver, $129 a month plus HST

Weekly lawn care through the season on your set day, edge then mow then trim, blown clean. In winter Silver covers the windrow, which is the ridge of packed snow the municipal plow leaves across the bottom of your driveway, on a separate daytime pass by 5 PM. Silver does not include clearing the driveway itself. It is the right tier for a household where somebody is home and able to clear their own driveway, and wants the lawn handled properly and the heaviest part of the snow taken off their hands.

Gold, $189 a month plus HST

Everything in Silver, and in winter the full driveway is cleared against a 7 AM target after overnight snow. Gold is the tier most working households in Oshawa end up on, because the question that actually matters in January is whether the car can get out before work.

Platinum, $279 a month plus HST

Everything in Gold, sequenced first with a 6:30 AM target, unlimited automatic salting through the winter, and first choice of service day in the lawn season. Platinum also includes the seasonal fertilizer program, which on Silver and Gold is a paid add on at $300 to $600 a season. Fertilizer is never part of the weekly lawn visit on any tier. It is a separate program with its own timing, and on Platinum its cost is already inside your monthly payment.

The Oshawa neighbourhoods we cut

The route is built tight and it is built north to south through Oshawa rather than scattered across Durham. We cut in Windfields, Kedron, Samac, Taunton and the newer streets across North Oshawa, where the lots are small, the turf is young, and the builder topsoil is usually thin enough that mowing height matters more than most people expect. We cut through McLaughlin, O'Neill and Eastdale, where the lots are older and larger, the trees are mature, and half the work on a visit is trimming around things that were planted forty years ago. And we cut in Donevan and Lakeview, closer to the lake, where the season runs slightly differently and the grass stays growing a little later into the autumn.

If your street is in Oshawa and it is not on that list, it is still worth calling. The route has a shape, and the honest answer is either yes or a reason why not.

Paid add ons, priced before anything starts

These are separate from the weekly visit and none of them is ever done without being quoted and agreed first.

  • Mulch supply and installation: $110 per yard installed
  • Hedge and shrub trimming: $85 an hour, two hour minimum
  • Garden bed maintenance: $75 an hour
  • Core aeration: $110 to $220, depending on lot size
  • Fertilizer program: $300 to $600 a season, included on Platinum only

Tree work above ladder height, irrigation repair, hardscaping, sod and grading are not services Northline sells. If you need one of them we will refer you rather than take the job.

Who is actually turning up

Owner operated. The person who quotes your property is the person who cuts it, which is the reason the service day does not drift and the reason nothing on the invoice is a surprise. Northline is fully insured and HST registered.

Hours are Monday to Friday 7 AM to 7 PM and Saturday 7 AM to 5 PM. Sunday is closed. We reply the same day Monday to Saturday, and a Sunday message is answered first thing Monday.

How to start in Oshawa

Call 905-244-5779 or email andrew@northlinepropertycare.ca with your address. You get a tier recommendation and a service day, not a sales visit. Existing members earn a referral reward of 30 percent off one month for both sides, with a $50 floor on each side, so a Gold member who refers a neighbour takes $56.70 off a month and the neighbour takes the same.

Lawn care in Oshawa: common questions

How much does weekly lawn care cost in Oshawa?

Northline lawn care in Oshawa starts at $129 a month plus HST on the Silver membership, billed in twelve equal payments on the last day of each month. Gold is $189 a month and Platinum is $279 a month. Every tier includes weekly lawn visits from May 1 to November 1, roughly 26 visits, and winter service as well, so the monthly payment does not change between summer and winter.

How often do you cut the grass?

Every week, on the same day every week, from May 1 to November 1. That is roughly 26 visits in a season. Northline does not offer a biweekly cut, because in July two weeks of growth cannot be taken off in one pass without removing far more than a third of the blade, which scalps the lawn and leaves clumps of clippings behind.

What is included in a lawn visit?

Each visit is edging first, then mowing, then trimming around fences, trees, posts and beds, and then blowing the hard surfaces clean. Fertilizer is not part of the weekly visit. It is a separate paid program at $300 to $600 a season, and it is included only on the Platinum membership.

Does the lawn membership also cover snow?

Yes. One membership covers both seasons in one monthly payment. Silver covers the windrow at the foot of the driveway on a daytime pass by 5 PM and does not clear the driveway itself. Gold and Platinum include full driveway clearing, with a 7 AM target on Gold and a 6:30 AM target on Platinum.

Which parts of Oshawa do you serve?

Northline cuts across Oshawa, including Windfields, Kedron, Samac, Taunton, North Oshawa, McLaughlin, O'Neill, Eastdale, Donevan and Lakeview, and also serves Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Bowmanville, Courtice and Clarington. The route is built geographically and a service day is confirmed when you join.

Grass cutting, lawn maintenance and the add ons in Oshawa

Grass cutting in Oshawa and lawn care in Oshawa are the same service under two names, and people search for both. Weekly lawn mowing in Oshawa is the spine of it: edge, then mow, then trim, on the same day every week from May 1 to November 1.

Lawn maintenance in Oshawa beyond the weekly cut is quoted before any of it starts. Aeration and overseeding run from August 20 to October 10, and hedge trimming in Oshawa is priced by the run rather than by the hour. Both sit on the add ons page.

From November the same membership becomes snow removal in Oshawa, billed inside the same twelve payments.

Andrew answers, October 2026

What happens in a drought? Do I still pay for a visit that did not happen?

We skip rather than cut, and we tell you why. Cutting a dormant lawn damages it. The payment does not change, because the payment is twelve equal instalments for a season rather than a charge per visit, and the same arrangement is what stops a twenty four storm winter costing you more than a four storm one. A contractor who mows on schedule through August because the schedule says so is charging you to hurt your grass.

One of these goes on each page and it is replaced monthly. If the question you have is not here, ask it: 905-244-5779.
