Snow Removal in Bowmanville: Gold and Platinum Plow the Driveway, Silver Clears the Windrow

Snow is sold inside a membership that covers lawn season and snow season together, billed in twelve equal payments on the last day of the month. There are three tiers and the winter difference between them is not a detail. Gold at $189 a month plus HST and Platinum at $279 a month plus HST plow the driveway. Silver at $129 a month plus HST does not plow the driveway. Silver gets a separate daytime pass that clears the windrow across the foot of the drive by 5 PM, plus four banked full clears a season on request, and no salting. Every driveway claim on this page names its tier, because that is the line most winter contracts keep deliberately soft.

In Bowmanville there is no bus you can fall back on

Compare that with what is already published by the largest operator serving this area: during a heavy storm it may take up to twenty four hours after the snow stops to reach a property, and in a storm running over more than one day it clears once a day. That is a reasonable thing for a big multi crew company to say, and in a town with no transit fallback it is also a full day at home. Our targets are 6:30 AM and 7:00 AM.

They are targets and not guarantees. Trucks break, storms do as they please, and no operator in Ontario can promise the snow will behave. What we will do is publish the trigger, publish the order, and tell you where you sit before you sign anything.

The 3 cm trigger, and why it is written on the page

We go out at 3 cm. Automatic. You do not call to start the run.

Most companies serving Bowmanville publish no trigger depth anywhere, and the silence is worth reading. A trigger that was never written down gets decided on the morning, by somebody weighing a full route against a marginal snowfall, and it is rarely decided in the homeowner's favour. Three centimetres written on the page takes the judgement call away. It is roughly where a car starts pushing snow instead of driving over it, and well under the depth where a drive packs into ice for a fortnight.

The three memberships, and exactly what each one does in winter

Silver, $129 a month plus HST

Silver does not plow the driveway and carries no 7 AM target. In winter it buys a separate daytime pass by 5 PM that takes out the windrow, the packed ridge the plow leaves across the bottom of the drive, plus four banked full driveway clears a season that you call on when you want them. No salting on Silver, ever. It suits a household that will shovel the drive itself and wants the worst part of the job, the plug at the end, done by a machine.

Gold, $189 a month plus HST

Gold plows the driveway and carries the 7:00 AM target after overnight snow. This is the tier most Bowmanville households actually need: the drive open before the morning drive out, cleared by a machine instead of by you in the dark at six. Salt on Gold is available as a salt only trip at $25 when you want it.

Platinum, $279 a month plus HST

Platinum is sequenced first, with a 6:30 AM target, unlimited automatic salting, and first choice of service day in lawn season. The salting line matters more here than people expect. The older streets in the King and Liberty core have sloped drives and short aprons that glaze over after a thaw and refreeze. Across this market salt is usually an extra charge per application or a bag the homeowner is expected to keep by the door. On Platinum it goes down when the conditions call for it, with no phone call and no separate bill.

The windrow at the end of your driveway

When the plow runs your street it leaves a ridge of compacted snow across every driveway on the block. It is the densest snow on the property, packed by a blade, and it usually lands about ten minutes after you have finished clearing everything else.

On Gold and Platinum it is cleared as part of the morning driveway clear. If the plow returns later the same day and blocks you in again after we have been through, a windrow return trip is $45. On Silver the windrow pass is the service: a daytime run by 5 PM, timed to come after the street has been plowed rather than before.

Snow removal in Liberty North, Waverley Road, Port Darlington and the King and Liberty core

Bowmanville has grown north and the north is a different snow job from the old town.

Liberty North and the newer streets either side of Liberty Street have wide driveways, often double, on land that is still open on the windward side in places. Wind crosses open ground, lifts snow and stacks it against the first obstruction, which is your driveway and your garage door. A wide drive after a drifting night is the better part of an hour with a shovel and a few minutes with a machine.

The Waverley Road corridor is a mix, with a lot of full size driveways and enough distance from the core that hand clearing before a seven o'clock departure is not a serious plan.

The King and Liberty core is the opposite problem. Older lots, shorter and sometimes sloped driveways, street parking, and plow banks that build up along the road edge until there is nowhere left to put anything by February. Down towards Port Darlington the wind comes off the lake, so snow that fell quietly overnight is not always where it fell by the morning.

We book by geography, one truck, one route. Bowmanville and Courtice run together on the east end of that route, so the more members on one street, the earlier everybody on that street is done.

What it costs, and how you actually pay for it

The membership is billed in twelve equal payments on the last day of each month, by card on file. It covers lawn season and snow season together, so there is no separate snow contract to sign in November and no seasonal lump sum landing in December.

Silver is $129 a month plus HST. Gold is $189 a month plus HST. Platinum is $279 a month plus HST.

Paying the year up front saves 5 percent: $1,470.60 Silver, $2,154.60 Gold, $3,180.60 Platinum.

Two extras exist and no others. A salt only trip is $25. A windrow return trip, for when the plow reblocks you after we have already cleared, is $45.

Refer a neighbour and you both take 30 percent off one month, with a floor of $50 each, so neither side ends up with a token discount.

Season dates, and the day the Bowmanville snow route closes

Snow season runs mid November to mid April. The snow route closes 15 November and the date does not move.

One truck holds a fixed number of driveways and still makes a 6:30 AM and a 7:00 AM target. Bowmanville sits at the east end of the route, which makes the count on this side of the region tighter, not looser. When it is full it is full, and hearing that in October is worth more to you than paying in January and missing the morning.

During a snow event somebody watches messages through the overnight and the early run, which is a different thing from office hours and is the part that matters at 4 AM.
