When Does Snow Actually Start in Oshawa?
Every winter a lot of Durham homeowners are caught out by the same thing: the first storm worth clearing arrives several weeks before the winter people picture in their heads.

The short answer
Expect first flurries in Durham in early to mid-November, the first snowfall worth clearing in late November or the first half of December, and the heaviest, coldest stretch through January and early February. A workable winter runs mid-November to mid-April, about five months.
The Durham winter, month by month
Averages, not promises: Ontario winters vary widely. But the shape of the season is consistent enough to plan against, and Durham typically sees somewhere in the range of twenty to thirty snowfalls worth clearing.

Lakeside Ajax, Pickering and Port Darlington in Bowmanville get less cold but more freezing rain and more drifting. North Oshawa, Windfields and the higher ground north of Taunton get more actual snow.
Why the first storm always catches people out
The pattern repeats every year in Durham. The first real snowfall lands somewhere between late November and mid-December, usually overnight, usually on a weekday. Everybody who meant to sort out snow clearing 'once winter starts' wakes up to 12 cm on the driveway and a 7:30 commute.
That's the morning the phones ring. It's also, unavoidably, the morning when every operator in the region is already fully committed to the customers who signed in October. Seasonal routes are built and sequenced weeks in advance; adding a driveway mid-storm means breaking a route that's already running, which is not something we would promise you.
This isn't a scarcity pitch, it's just how route-based work functions. If you want snow clearing, the decision has to be made in September or October. By the time it's snowing, you're choosing from whoever hasn't sold out, which is a much worse list.
What to have sorted before mid-November
If you're clearing it yourself
Service the blower in October, not on the first storm morning. Fresh fuel with stabilizer, new plug, check the auger belt and the shear pins.
Buy salt in October. It sells out region-wide within days of the first storm, every single year.
Put reflective markers along the driveway edges before the ground freezes, and have somewhere planned to put the snow that isn't in front of the garage.
If you're hiring per storm
Understand what you're buying: most per-visit operators serve their seasonal customers first. You're cleared after them, which in a big storm can mean afternoon.
Get the trigger depth in writing. Many per-visit contractors won't come out for under 5 cm, and a winter of 4 cm falls is still a winter of shovelling.
Budget honestly. At $45 to $95 a visit and twenty-plus events, per-storm is rarely the cheap option people assume it is.
If you want a seasonal contract
Sign in September or October. Routes are built by density, and the earlier you're on a street the earlier in the sequence you sit.
Check whether walkways and steps are included or extra: this is where most cheap quotes hide.
Confirm the season dates. Mid-November to mid-April is right for Durham; a contract ending 31 March leaves you exposed in the month that produces the heaviest snow.
The part of winter nobody plans for: deep cold
Rock salt (ordinary sodium chloride, which is what almost everybody uses) stops working properly somewhere below about minus 10 °C. It doesn't fail gradually; the melting slows sharply and then it's just grit sitting on ice.
Durham gets multi-day stretches below that most Januaries. In those weeks the answer isn't more salt: it's mechanical clearing right down to the surface before anything gets a chance to bond, plus a different product where the temperature demands it. Calcium chloride works far colder and is what belongs on steps and walkways in a cold snap.

Common questions
How much snow does Oshawa get in a year?
It varies a great deal, but the number that matters for planning isn't centimetres: it's events. Durham typically sees somewhere between twenty and thirty snowfalls in a season that are worth clearing. That's the figure to price against, because whether the total was 90 cm or 160 cm, you still went outside about twenty-five times.
When should a snow contract start and end?
Mid-November to mid-April for Durham Region. Starting 1 December leaves you uncovered for the storms that catch people out, and ending 31 March leaves you uncovered for wet April snow, which is the heaviest of the year. Our seasonal contracts run the full five months.
What's the trigger depth: when do you actually come out?
We clear at 5 cm, with no cap on the number of visits. In a long storm we run a pass partway through and a second once it stops, so you aren't facing 40 cm in one go. The full storm procedure is on our snow page.
How early will my driveway be done?
The target for overnight snow is before 7 AM for Gold members and 6:30 AM for Platinum. Where you sit in the sequence depends on route density on your street, which is why we build routes subdivision by subdivision rather than taking scattered accounts.
Have it arranged before the first storm: and the lawn with it
The homeowners who get caught out are the ones who start looking in the week of the first real snowfall. Our seasonal contracts run the full five months, mid-November to mid-April, with unlimited visits and no per-storm charge, and the same membership picks the lawn up again in April, so winter is not something you have to re-arrange every autumn.
